After the huge box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo and Illumination were quick to announce that a sequel was in development. Set to hit theaters on 3rd April 2026, not much else has been known about the project, except that Yoshi would be playing an important role, as hinted at by the post-credit scene of the first CG-animated film.
In a press release from NBCUniversal that goes over their future content slate, the title of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel was seemingly revealed, with “Super Mario World” listed alongside other upcoming blockbusters. Yoshi’s first in-game appearance was Super Mario World (1990) on the SNES, so it makes perfect sense for the sequel, which will heavily feature the fan-favourite character, to use the same name.
Super Mario World is being produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and written by Matthew Fogel.
